Want to enjoy doing summer activities but don’t want your wallet to suffer? Saving money doesn’t mean staying home all day while everyone seems to be having the time of their lives. Coming up with fun and creative ideas for activities to do during the summer can be tough…so I’ve got you covered! here are 12 things to do this summer to stay happy and healthy (without breaking the bank!)

1. Have a picnic
You don’t have to be at the beach to soak up some sun. Find yourself a nice, clear spot at the local park with a book or with friends and pack a healthy and nutritious lunch in your picnic basket! Good picnic foods can be veggies and this edamame hummus, or a chickpea salad and avocado smash sandwich!
If you live in an apartment (like I do) and don’t have a front yard or a backyard to grow your favourite flowers or plants in, plant them indoors! Get some seeds, small plants or succulents from your local market and plant them in reusable containers like mason jars and large yogurt cups. The best indoor plants that I like to grow are aloe, devil’s ivy and cactuses! It’s a great way to purify the air in your home while adding some green into your life.
3. Pick strawberries
It’s strawberry season! Search up where your local strawberry or organic farm is and spend a couple of hours outside with your friends picking your own locally grown berries! This is also a great way to work in your tan (just remember to wear sunscreen). Use your fresh strawberries in a handful of recipes like this strawberry rhubarb chia pudding or these creamy strawberry basil popsicles!
4. Practice yoga in a park
Take your yoga practice outside this summer. As working people, we’re often so connected with phones and computers that we forget to spend time in the beauty of mother nature. Loosen up and relax with your group of yogis (or find an outdoor yoga group!) before heading back to work.
5. Hit up some hiking trails
You don’t have to be an outdoor enthusiast to try hiking in the summertime. Hiking trails can be easily found in and around any city. The best part is they can be as short as one hour or as long as four hours, depending on your preference. You can usually google or find a map nearby showing the various trails and how long they are. Remember to stay hydrated and bring snacks!
6. Find your inner minimalist
Though minimalism isn’t a concept for everyone, de-cluttering can help you de-stress and feel lighter, all while appreciating the little things. Hold onto things that bring you joy, and rid yourself of anything that doesn’t. Start with your closet, then the kitchen, then work your way around the home!
7. Have a yard sale
After you’ve de-cluttered some stuff from your house, give away your old goods, or even better- sell’em! Put your old stuff to use by spending your weekend afternoon hosting a community yard sale. Yard sales could also be a great place to meet new people around your neighbourhood!
8. Try your hand at photography
Up your Instagram game! Whether you are in the city or in the suburbs, head outside with your camera (or cellphone!) and photograph the hidden gems around you. Who knows? 9. Make your own healthy popsicles
Choose your own flavours and enjoy homemade popsicles this summer with your friends! Whether you like creamy or fruity flavours, making your own popsicles can be super simple and turn out insta-worthy. Just stick them in the freezer and take them out to enjoy as you wish. 10. Have a DIY Spa day
Treat yourself and the girls to a nice spa day…DIY style! Homemade masks are affordable, simple and so easy to make. (Check out this Matcha green tea face mask by Om and the City!) After relaxing with some spa time, tackle more activities in this list and head out for a picnic lunch!
11. Visit the farmer’s market
Farmer’s markets start to take full bloom in the summer and they are one of my favourite places to be on a weekend. It’s such a lovely way to spend the morning seeing what local produce is in season and getting inspired for recipes. My second favourite thing about farmer’s markets is getting to taste all the free samples of delicious, ripe fruit and vegetables. It’ll be hard to resist not getting a basket of everything. 12. Check the community calendar for free events
Sometimes the best events around are free! Visit your local city’s website to see the summary of events and mark your calendars with free events this summer. There’s always a ton of concerts, festivals and tons of beautiful flower fields to visit!
