Iced Matcha Latte
This Iced Matcha Latte recipe is perfect when you want a refreshing caffeinated drink that is light, creamy and tastes even better than Starbucks Iced Matcha Latte!
What is an iced matcha latte?
An Iced Matcha Latte is a latte that is made with Matcha green tea rather than coffee. Matcha is a premium green tea that is made by grinding up the actual tea leaves into a fine powder. Rather than steeping the tea leaves in a tea bag, matcha powder is added directly to hot water.
Matcha tea is from Japan and is known to be a “superfood” packed with nutrients and antioxidants. You can find Matcha powder at most grocery stores, health food stores, and even on Amazon.
Why you’ll love this latte recipe
- Easy to make. You’ll be surprised how easy it is to make an iced matcha latte at home. The entire recipe only takes 5 minutes to make.
- Better and cheaper than Starbucks. Rather than spending over $5 on a matcha latte at Starbucks, you can make this one at home much cheaper! (And it tastes better too!)
- Healthy and delicious. Matcha is a delicious and healthy superfood that has so many health benefits. When added to this iced latte it is so delicious.
Iced matcha latte key ingredients
- Matcha: for this recipe, you will need matcha powder. This is a great pantry staple to have on hand!
- Water: the matcha is mixed with a little bit of water to help it dissolve before adding it to the latte.
- Milk: you can use any type of milk you love, I like to use oat milk in this recipe. Some other great options are soy milk, coconut milk or almond milk.
- Honey: this is used to sweeten the latte. You can also use agave, maple syrup or sugar.
- Vanilla (optional): this is an optional ingredient if you want a hint of vanilla flavour in the matcha latte.
- Ice: you can’t have an iced latte without ice!
Best type of matcha to use
When shopping for matcha powder, you may come across a couple of different types of matcha.
- Ceremonial grade matcha: this is the highest quality matcha powder that is made from the youngest tea leaves. It has a very smooth and creamy taste. This type of matcha is most commonly used to drink as plain matcha tea and has a vibrant green colour.
- Culinary grade matcha: this matcha is still great quality, but not quite as high quality as ceremonial grade matcha and has a more robust taste. This type of matcha is used mostly in lattes, baking and other recipes.
For this recipe, culinary-grade matcha is most commonly used since the matcha is mixed with milk and other ingredients. However, if you have ceremonial grade matcha on hand you can use that too.
How to make an iced matcha latte
Step 1
Whisk together the matcha powder with warm water until combined. Then mix in the honey and maple syrup.
Step 2
Full a tall glass with ice and the oat milk (or whichever type of milk you are using.)
Step 3
Pour the matcha tea into the glass. Stir together to incorporate all the ingredients.
Tips for making a perfect latte
- Add as much matcha powder as you like. This recipe calls for 1-2 teaspoons of matcha powder. This will depend on how strong you like your matcha latte.
- Sweeten to taste. Depending on your personal preference, you may enjoy your latte sweeter or less sweet. Add as little or as much sweetener as needed. You can always add in some extra honey or sweetener of choice at the end.
- Use a lot of ice. An iced latte requires a lot of ice! It’s easiest to fill a glass with smaller-sized iced cubes for best results.
- Use unsweetened milk. If using plant-based milk, make sure to check the label for “unsweetened.” Many classic versions of plant-based milk such as almond milk and oat milk have added sugars in them. Since there is honey added to this recipe it’s best to stick to the unsweetened milk!
- Use a milk frother for a frothy top or “cold foam”. This is totally optional, but will give you that frothy top on your iced latte!
