There is often a misconception around self-care that in order to successfully treat yourself, you gotta spending a lot of moolah. Yoga classes, gym memberships, facials and massages all add up and take a significant toll on your bank account.

While of course these little luxurious can make you feel relaxed & revitalized, there are other remedies that can help contribute to your overall well-being without breaking the bank!

Check out these 5 ways to practice self-care on a budget to start your journey towards a healthier lifestyle!

Remember, always evaluate your spending first!

When you’re about to implement a budgeted self-care routine into your daily life, it is important to evaluate your spending beforehand. Do you know what the basics of managing money are? In doing so, you’re ensuring that you’re not paying for unnecessary costs, and determining if there are any monthly bills you could cut down. Are you using less cell-phone data than you thought you were? Is there a student loan you could refinance? Cutting costs and saving money will give you more peace of mind and reduce stress the same way self-care does!

5 ways to practice self-care on a budget:

1. Take a bath

Soaking your body in a bathtub is the perfect way to rinse away your worries! It relaxes your muscles, calms your mind and soothes your skin. For only $6, drop a bath bomb into the water for a nice scent and a burst of essential oils. To make it an even more relaxing experience, play some spa music for a soothing tune.

2. Write in a journal

Depending on what you are writing about, journaling can help you achieve goals, relieve anxiety or stress, boost your memory and IQ, and improve self-confidence. Taking 5-15 minutes out of your day to write down your thoughts, positive or negative, can be beneficial to your well-being. After you write, you’ll feel as though you’re reliving positive experiences or letting go of the negative ones!

3. Exercise

Taking 20-30 minutes everyday to perform a workout will not only help your body physically but mentally as well. Remember, you don’t need to spend money on a gym membership to get in a decent workout! Workouts can be done equipment-free and at home. If you have access to YouTube, you can find hundreds of free workout videos and classes online. If you don’t want to follow an instructor, try using a free exercise app to get your sweat on! You can also use nature for a free workout. Go for a run, hike, or take your dog (or just yourself) for a walk!

4. Drink more water

I know it seems obvious, but so many people forget to hydrate on a regular basis! Hydration is key and is an essential part of self-care. Drinking the right amount of water every day will make you feel like a million dollars, and here are some ways to remind yourself to do so:

    • Set an alarm on your phone to remind yourself to drink more water.
    • Have a big glass of water in the morning as soon as you wake up. This will help you start your day off on the right foot!
    • Use a time tracker water bottle: These can be found for as little as $10, and will remind you to drink a certain amount of water by a certain time throughout the day.

5. Practice meditation

Meditation improves concentration and clears your mind. Practicing this self-care method weekly (or daily if you have the time) will teach you how to be a better version of yourself. Using a mediation app (I like headspace and calm) can make meditation easier to adjust to at first, but with practice and repetition, you’ll see an improvement in your metal state, feel less stressed, and be more at peace…and it won’t cost a cent!Â
