Air fryer tofu with cornstarch

While tofu is delicious pan-fried or deep-fried, it’s even more delicious made in an air fryer. Besides the fact that the tofu comes out super crispy, it’s super easy to make and has minimal cleanup.

The secret to making tofu extra-crispy in an air fryer is to coat the tofu with cornstarch. This coating on the tofu will help the tofu cubes crisp up and give them a delicious texture.

If you prefer to make the tofu without cornstarch, it’s still delicious, but won’t be quite as crispy.

How to serve crispy tofu

Air fryer tofu can be served in many different ways. You can make air fryer tofu and then stir-fry it or add sauce, serve it as a side, or serve it as a main with your favourite grains and vegetables. Here are some of my favourite way to serve this crispy tofu.

How to store and reheat

Store leftovers of this air fryer tofu in the fridge for up to 5 days.

Air fryer tofu is best reheated in the air fryer for 3-5 minutes, but can also be reheated in the oven at 400 degrees F for 5-8 minutes.

Expert tips for air fryer tofu

  • Use firm or extra-firm tofu. If you use medium or soft tofu, it won’t become crispy in the air fryer. Extra-firm tofu has the least amount of liquid in it, so it’s the best option for crispy tofu. (But firm tofu works great too!)
  • Marinade the tofu for extra flavour. If you find tofu tends to be bland, make sure to marinade it before air frying. This will infuse the tofu with more flavour.
  • Cut into any shape you like. For this recipe, I cut the tofu into small cubes, but you can also cut the tofu into strips if you like.
  • Dont overfill the airfryer. If you have a small air fryer, you may need to make the tofu in two batches. It’s important to leave some space between all the cubes of tofu in the air fryer. (This is what helps make each cube super crispy!)

FAQ

Do I have the press tofu before air frying?

It’s best to press the tofu between a few sheets of paper towel before air frying to remove any excess liquid. Some people like to press the tofu in a tofu press, however, I find this isn’t necessary.

Do I need to marinate tofu before air frying?

You don’t have to, but the tofu will have more flavour if you do. If you plan on adding sauce on top of the tofu, you can skip the marinade.

Can I make air fryer tofu without cornstarch?

Yes! If you prefer to make it without cornstarch just commit this ingredient. Just keep in mind the tofu will be slightly less crispy.

Can I reheat this tofu in the microwave?

I don’t recommend reheating crispy tofu in the microwave as it will become soft and soggy. It’s best reheated in the air fryer or in the oven.
