I’ve been making this on weekly recently and I have a feeling you will too. It’s made with just plain Greek yogurt whisked together with cocoa powder, maple syrup, vanilla, and a pinch of sea salt but it tastes way more indulgent than you’d expect. If you prefer using cottage cheese instead of Greek yogurt then my Cottage Cheese Chocolate Mousse is the recipe for you.
I’ve tested a few variations of this recipe with different yogurts, and using cocoa powder vs. melted chocolate and after 5 tests this is the version that I consider perfect! I would highly recommend cocoa powder over melted chocolate in this recipe since it incorporates smoothly, while melted chocolate can seize up if your yogurt it at all cold and you’ll end up with a clumpy mess.
Recipe Highlights
- Quick and easy: This recipe comes together in just 10 minutes with simple pantry ingredients.
- High in protein: 15 grams per serving so it’s a dessert that will keep you satiated. Also give my Chocolate Chia Mousse a try for another high protein dessert.
- Rich and chocolatey: Cocoa powder gives you deep chocolate flavour without any of the fuss of melting chocolate.
- Easy to adjust: You can dial the sweetness up or down to taste, and the fat percentage of your yogurt changes the richness too.
Ingredient Notes & Substitutions

Greek yogurt: Thick yogurt, at least 2% or full fat yogurt work best for the right texture. I tested this with both 2% and 5% and both work well, but my preference 5% yogurt which gives a richer, creamier result. If you use 0% it will work but the mousse won’t have the same body. And again, make sure to use a brand of Greek yogurt that is THICK for best results.
Cocoa powder: Use a good quality unsweetened cocoa powder. Dutch process gives a slightly deeper, smoother chocolate flavour, but natural cocoa powder works too. Dutch cocoa also tastes great in my Chocolate Overnight Oats if you love chocolate for breakfast.
Maple syrup: Start with 4 tablespoons and adjust from there depending on how sweet you like it. Honey or agave work as a 1:1 substitute.

How To Make Greek Yogurt Chocolate Mousse

Step 1: Add the Greek yogurt, cocoa powder, maple syrup, vanilla, and sea salt to a bowl.

Step 2: Whisk everything together until completely smooth and no cocoa powder streaks remain.

Step 3: It should be light and fluffy like this. Taste and adjust the sweetness with a little more maple syrup if needed.

Step 4: Refrigerate for at least an hour to thicken.
How To Store
Store this Greek Yogurt Chocolate Mousse in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. It actually gets a little thicker and fudgier as it sits which is a bonus! Give it a quick stir before serving if it’s been in the fridge for a day or two. (Some liquid forming on the top is normal. Pour it out or mix it in.)
Jess’s Tips
- Use thick yogurt: This is the most important note. A thin or watery yogurt will give you a runny mousse rather than something thick and spoonable. Use leftover yogurt to make a batch of Frozen Yogurt Granola Cups.
- Whisk well: Make sure you whisk until there are absolutely no cocoa powder streaks left. It takes about a minute of good whisking and makes a big difference to the final texture.
- Adjust sweetness to taste: Four tablespoons of maple syrup gives a lightly sweet result. If you like things a little sweeter, add another tablespoon and taste as you go.
- Chill it long enough: Chill for at least an hour. The texture firms after sitting in the fridge.
- Add toppings: A little flaky sea salt, some fresh berries, a dollop of whipped cream or some healthy chocolate granola are all great options.
