After more than 10 years of creating chia seed recipes I’ve learned that chia seeds are one of the easiest ways to turn simple ingredients into something delicious! They naturally thicken recipes, add texture, and work really well in homemade chia seed jam, chia puddings like my protein chia seed pudding and freezer snacks.

These Chocolate Chia Jam Bites are made with a base of raspberry chia seed jam frozen into disks and dipped in dark chocolate. They’re easy to make, no bake and they store perfectly in the freezer to have on hand for sweet treat o’clock. They can also be made with any variety of fruity jam filling you love like strawberry, blueberry peach or mango.

Recipe Highlights

  • Easy freezer snack: These store well in the freezer for a quick grab-and-go treat. Also try my Frozen Yogurt Granola Cups for another freezer favourite!
  • Simple ingredients: Just raspberries, chia seeds, maple syrup, and dark chocolate.
  • Lightly sweetened: The raspberry filling is sweetened mostly with fruit, with just a touch of maple syrup if needed. I use a similar raspberry filling for my Raspberry Crumble Bars which also make a great dessert!
  • Great for meal prep: Make a batch once and keep them in the freezer for weeks. (If you don’t eat them all right away!)

Ingredient Notes

Ingredients to make chocolate chia seed jam bites.

Raspberries: Fresh or frozen raspberries both work. Frozen raspberries tend to break down faster and create a smoother jam filling while fresh will take slightly longer to cook down. If you love raspberries also try my Raspberry Chia Pudding, it’s a reader favourite!

Dark chocolate: Use good-quality dark chocolate for the best flavour. I recommend 70% dark chocolate but any chocolate you love works.

Maple syrup: Optional to sweeten to taste. You can also substitute with honey or sugar.

How To Store

Store in an airtight container in the freezer for up to 2 months. Let them sit at room temperature for a few minutes before eating for the best texture.

Jess’s Tips

  • Freeze the jam discs fully: If they aren’t completely frozen before dipping, they’ll fall apart when dipping in the melted chocolate.
  • Use parchment paper: This prevents sticking and makes the frozen bites much easier to remove.
  • Taste the raspberry mixture before freezing: Depending on your berries, you may want a little maple syrup for balance.
  • Don’t make the discs too large: Smaller bites are easier to dip and give you a better chocolate-to-jam ratio.
  • Let the chocolate cool slightly before dipping: Very hot chocolate can melt the frozen jam centres too quickly.
  • Let them thaw slightly before eating: This is key! Straight from the freezer, the centres are very firm, but after a few minutes they become soft and jammy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use strawberries instead of raspberries in these chia jam bites?

Yes. Strawberries, blueberries, or mixed berries all work well in this recipe!

Can I use store bought jam?

Yes if you prefer you can use store-bought jam, but homemade is my preference!

Can I store these in the refrigerator?

Technically yes however the filling will be quite soft in the centre. I find it best to keep them stored in the freezer and just let them thaw a few minutes before serving.

Description

These Chocolate Chia Jam Bites have a soft, jammy centre and dark chocolate shell. They’re made with just 4 ingredients and are the perfect make-ahead treat to keep stashed in the freezer.

Ingredients

Units
  • 2 cups raspberries, fresh or frozen
  • 2 tablespoons chia seeds
  • 12 tablespoons maple syrup (optional)
  • 1 cup dark chocolate (I recommend 70%)

Instructions

  1. Add raspberries and chia seeds to a small pot over medium heat. Cook for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thick and jammy. Taste and sweeten with maple syrup if needed.
  2. Let the jam cool for 10 minutes to thicken, then spoon small discs of jam onto a parchment-lined baking sheet. Freeze for at least 2 hours or until the jam disks are frozen.
  3. Melt the chocolate then working quickly, dip the frozen discs into the melted dark chocolate, letting any excess drip off, then return to the baking sheet and freeze for 15 minutes to set.
  4. Let the bites thaw for 5 minutes before eating so the centre softens and gets jammy.

Notes

Make sure the jam disks are completely frozen before dipping in chocolate.
Use parchment paper or a silicone mat so the bites release easily.
Keep the jam discs small for easier dipping and better texture.
Store in the freezer.
