Raise your hand if you’re excited for Cinco de Mayo!

*Everyone raises hands.*

Oh yes. I’m a huge fan of Mexican food and love celebrating Cinco de Mayo for an excuse to eat even more of it. (As if taco Tuesday’s weren’t enough already.)

Now I love a good taco, guacamole or tostada, but today I wanted to make something a little more celebratory: a spicy grapefruit margarita!

I fell in love with margaritas on my most recent trip to Tulum. Everything from a passionfruit margarita, to a mandarin margarita to a japaleno and cilantro margarita. (YUM.) So I thought it’s about time I share this UH-AMAZING cocktail with you!

A grapefruit margarita recipe

pouring a grapefruit margarita from a drink shaker into a glass

Traditionally a margarita is made with a few simple ingredients: tequila, lime juice, orange liquor and agave syrup.

For this recipe, we’re flavouring the margarita with grapefruit instead of lime. This gives the margarita a unique twist and a nice refreshing flavour! A grapefruit margarita is similar to a drink called a Paloma, but a Paloma is fizzy and does not have any orange liquor in it.

This recipe is the perfect cocktail to enjoy for happy hour, a backyard bbq, or a weekend brunch!

How to make a spicy grapefruit margarita

A margarita is best made in a cocktail shaker so you can really get everything mixed together well.

If you don’t have a cocktail shaker on hand, you can also just mix the ingredients together in a pitcher.

Here’s what you’ll need to make this margarita:

  • Freshly squeezed grapefruit juice
  • Freshly squeezed lime juice
  • Jalapeno
  • Tequila
  • Orange liquor
  • Agave nectar

Then just mix it all up in a cocktail shaker with some ice and pour it into your cocktail glass.

A few notes on the recipe

I highly recommend that you stick with FRESHLY SQUEEZED juice for this recipe. Seriously, it makes all the difference for an amazing margarita.

If you’re making a larger quantity of margaritas or don’t have time to squeeze the juice yourself, you can purchase already make freshly squeezed grapefruit juice from your local grocery shop.

Make sure to use a good quality orange liquor and tequila when you’re making a margarita. Again, this will make all the difference for a delicious tasting cocktail! My personal favourites to use are cointreau and patron tequila.

If you aren’t a fan of spice, just omit the jalapeno peppers in this recipe entirely.

These spicy grapefruit margaritas are best enjoyed right after they’re made.

A refreshing cocktail with fresh ingredients and a little bit of a spicy kick!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 cup freshly squeezed grapefruit juice
  • 3 tbsp freshly squeezed lime juice
  • 2 tbsp agave nectar
  • 3 oz white tequila (I use patron)
  • 2 oz orange liquor (I use Cointreau)
  • 1 jalapeno, cut into rings
  • 23 cups of ice
  • salt to rim the glass (optional)

Instructions

  1. Rim the glass: Use a lime wedge to wet the rim of your glasses and then dip the rim into a plate with some salt.
  2. Mix the cocktail: Add the grapefruit juice, lime juice, agave nectar, tequila, orange liquor, sliced jalapeno and half the ice to a cocktail shaker and shake until well combined.
  3. Serve: Add the remaining ice to your glasses and pour the margaritas into your glasses

Notes

Mix things up: You can use freshly squeezed orange juice, pineapple juice, passionfruit juice and so on instead of grapefruit in this cocktail!
