Key Ingredients

Ingredients to make cottage cheese queso.
  • Cottage cheese: I recommend using 2% or higher for the cottage cheese for the creamiest texture. Some brands are saltier than others, so taste and adjust seasoning if needed. If you have leftover cottage cheese use it to whip up a batch of high protein cottage cheese chocolate mousse for dessert!
  • Tex Mex shredded cheese: I love the additional of a Tex-Mex shredded cheese blend in this recipe because it has the addition of jalapeno to it, which really bumps up the flavour in this dip! You could also use shredded cheddar cheese or monterey jack cheese.
  • Garlic: Fresh garlic is the secret ingredient that really adds tons of flavour and makes this queso dip special. If needed you can use garlic powder, but I highly recommend the real thing.

Ways to Serve Queso Dip

How to Store

Store the queso in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days. If it thickens in the fridge, stir in a splash of water or microwave it briefly before serving.

Jess’s Tips

  • Use 2% or higher cottage cheese for the creamiest texture. This adds richness to the dip and is also great in recipes like my Cottage Cheese Oat Pancakes.
  • Start with less cayenne and adjust to your spice tolerance.
  • Add water 1 tablespoon at a time to avoid thinning the dip too much.
  • Want it extra cheesy? Add a little more Tex Mex blend or even a spoon of cream cheese.
  • Microwave in short bursts if heating to avoid overheating or drying out the dip.
  • Taste before serving to adjust salt or spice levels based on your cheese and cottage cheese brand.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Cottage Cheese Queso good cold?

Absolutely! It’s great cold or with chips or veggies, but can also be enjoyed warm.

Does cottage cheese melt like regular cheese in queso dip?

No. If warming the dip the cottage cheese will not melt into a stringy cheesy texture, but it will melt into a creamy texture that is delicious.

Can you freeze Cottage Cheese Queso Dip?

I don’t recommend it. The texture of cottage cheese can will become grainy and watery after defrosting. For best results, store it in the fridge and enjoy within 3–4 days.

Description

This Cottage Cheese Queso Dips packs 17 grams of protein per serving and is ready in just 5 minutes!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup cottage cheese (2% recommended)
  • 1/4 cup Tex Mex shredded cheese
  • 1/2 tsp chili powder
  • Pinch of cayenne pepper
  • 1 garlic clove, roughly chopped
  • 12 tbsp water (as needed, to adjust texture)

Instructions

  1. Add the cottage cheese, Tex Mex cheese, chili powder, cayenne, garlic, and 1 tablespoon of water to a blender or food processor.
  2. Blend until smooth and creamy. Add an extra splash of water if needed to loosen the texture.
  3. Serve cold straight from the blender, or warm it up in a microwave-safe bowl in the microwave on high for 30–60 seconds until warmed through.
  4. Enjoy immediately, or store in the fridge for up to 4 days.

Notes

  • Serve hot or cold depending on your preference—it’s creamy and delicious either way.
  • Adjust the texture by blending in 1–2 tablespoons of water until smooth and creamy.
  • If it’s hard to blend, use a food processor instead of a blender for easier mixing.
